Why Do We Give?
The topic of giving, or tithing (giving a tenth), is hotly debated, both inside the church and out. So, at Gracelife, we keep things simple, and rely on what the Bible tells us about giving.
Because We’re Thankful
We believe that giving is done out of a heart of thanksgiving, appreciation for all that God has done for us and continues to do in our lives.
So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
-2 Corinthians 9:7
When we give, we are not only saying that we trust God with our money and trust Him to provide and to take care of us, but we also recognize that all good things originate from Him.
Because We Trust God
When we choose to give God that tenth of our increase, we say, in effect, that we trust that He takes care of us. Giving illustrates our awareness that He is our provider, not a job, an investment, not even our ability to earn an income.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
-Matthew 6:24
Because we believe in giving of our first fruits (or as some call it the Tithe)
At Gracelife we believe that Tithing is not necessarily a “grace vs law” issue but one of “first-fruits”. It is a pattern that can be picked up and runs its way through the scriptures forming a “biblical-narrative”. Starting with Cain and Abel (Gen 4:4-5) through Abraham, through the law, and down into the New Covenant and is used among other things, to support the full-time ministers preaching the Gospel through the vehicle of the local Church.
This is seen as the first fruits of a persons income (but can also be said of prayer, devotions or any other worship practice). It is attributed to the “increase of one’s wealth), not just or exclusively to a persons weekly/monthly salary). “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops;” Prov 3:9) This “first fruits” are brought to the storehouse
Tithing/first fruits is a faith based action, that says, “Lord all I have is yours, here, take the first 10% as an honorarium to You for all you provide for me!”
It should then be given with happy and sincere heart.
We do not believe that you will be cursed if you don’t tithe as some might preach but we do believe that you reap what you sow, and if you sow generously you will reap generously. If the motive to not bring the first-fruits/tithe is “fear of lack” then the motive is still wrong and will not manifest the blessing of God…Some people say that 10% for a single mom is hard to do…Not necessarily, tell that to the little old widow that gave 100%, she would say “Trust God!”
As you exercise faith, may the blessing come, that you might continue to be a blessing!
